2023 RULES: Bids

I have adjusted the free agency bid score a bit to put more emphasis on total contract amounts as there were some complaints about 1-year high SB bids too easily beating longer-term deals. Our previous formula favored guaranteed money more, which I think is still important to a player more than unguaranteed totals, but we gave the total size of the deal a little more weight. A 1-year high SB deal can still beat a longer one, but just has to be stronger to do so now than before.

Whenever tweaking a formula there may be some unintended consequences, so check it out in the days before free agency and let me know if any particular counter-bids that you don't like are still problematic or if you notice any other issues with varying types of counter-offers winning that shouldn't. Hope to get the bid score tightened up more heading into free agency. Here's a page you can test different bids:

The NFL is starting to spend their new league year dollars now, and we will be soon too. I have to finish converting all the team roster finances to 2023 figures, then we'll do a GM check-in to get an exact idea on teams we have to fill. Some functions will be open sooner than others (such as the ability to place franchise tag/RFA decisions, make cuts and sign LTCs prior to free agency) but we'll know more about exact dates for completely opening everything up once we know more after GM check-ins and get teams situated.

After free agency starts, I'd really like to limit counter-bid complaints by fixing things ahead of time. So while you're getting ready for the season, check out the test bid link above and let me know now if you think there are issues with counter-bids that are allowed to win out so we can look at it further and possibly adjust before bids get real.

I also just put in the franchise/transition tag values for 2023 that impact LTCs. I'm also taking a look at those prior to the new season starting to make sure we're keeping up. I think we had some way under-valued LTCs in recent years for elite QBs compared to where the real market went, so want to look into what we're calculating a bit and adjust as needed before we turn things on again. Let me know if you notice any LTC issues that should be looked into for possible adjustment.

Backup Qbs rated lower than 70 are worth a LTC value of 21M. Seems a little high?

I think LTC's could definitely use an adjustment for low rated QBs.

How often are you using your LTC's on these kind of players? You should be able to retain players rated this low via free agency. I believe the floor for the QB LTC's was put in place so that any QB worth signing a LTC wouldn't be giving a huge team friendly deal to the team.

I think you could argue that the floor of the LTC value for QB's could be raised a bit too

I agree with Tino. You shouldn't be signing backup QBs under 70 to LTCs anyways. The contract value should be moot.

I think LTCs for QBs are too low. Look at the Mahomes and Allen contracts...they are much lower than they would be IRL. I also agree that signing a backup QB to LTC isn't exactly the spirit of why LTCs were put into place.
