With the draft completed, I'll add the undrafted players to the free agency pool for monday morning. They can be signed for $310K per year as younger players with lower minimum than the veteran level.
Here's how it works for drafted players and the practice squad in August for those new to the program:
Practice squad players are first cut by their original teams and not able to make the 53 man roster, and essentially free agents who can be signed by any team. But the team they practice with everyday and are working out with has the option of MATCHING any offer they get (1 week to match) if they are willing add to their 53 man roster and give the player a roster spot and bidded salary.
Practice squads won't come into effect until near the 53-man roster limit as the season approaches, as there are currently no limits on roster size and wouldn't make sense to have p-squad now (as NFL doesn't during training camp either and only as they start to cut to 53-man rosters).
If you ended up drafting a player you don't really want, you can cut before July with no cost. We'll start signing draftee contracts in July, probably later in the month as we examine this year's rookie salary structures and deal groupings for various levels of draft picks to attempt to mirror somewhat here.
You can also trade draftee rights without salary cap implications any time until July. Once they are signed, they will have a signing bonus attached to their contract. Let me know if any questions.
We'll have some discussion this week about draft changes for next year. My current thought for next year would be something like this where round 1 on a sunday, then tacking a round and a half per day with shorter time windows (10 minutes per pick in rounds 3-7) which is somewhat between don't rush it and don't let it drag -- working out nicely with round 1 getting it's focussed day and then splitting the next 6 rounds up over 4 days.
I also want to get a head start on the draft next year by working out all the compensatory free agency stuff this week and putting in those picks for next year already based upon free agency results now while fresh in memory. Teams who lost more UFAs than gained could be in for an additional pick or two next draft (4 max).
The next big date is June 1st. If you have a player with a Roster Bonus (RB) that money will be paid on 6/1. It already counts toward your cap total, but if you cut or trade the player now you can avoid paying that bonus. After 6/1, if you cut or trade the player the money you paid for the roster bonus will stay on your salary cap this year whether the player is on your team or not as money you've paid from this year's cap.
