LTC figures
Re: LTC figures
I like the idea of No trade clause the same as we had last year, anymore than that I am against.
Re: LTC figures
I think the Asomugha example is not really a problem though. That's part of the point of the average market deal. One or two bad deals in the midlevel range should average out when taking the top 10 salaries. I am much less worried about a high deal inflating a LTC value than rookie deals pulling it down because if the LTC deal is too high, you can always opt for resigning him with your unlimited bids on the open market.
Also, I've seen some discussion of the LTC value being a 10% increase on the average of the top 10 deals. Maybe some agree, but this isn't the view I had. I am in favor of the deal being the greater of the 10 average salaries (of similar or lesser ranked players) and 1.1 times the players current salary. The idea is simply that a highly paid player won't take a pay cut because the average 10 salaries are lower than his current contract value. Its just a safeguard against low LTC values, and it adds a wrinkle for resigning top of the market guys to LTC's. Let's invent a 99 rated OT. Say you signed him to a three year contract at 8 million a year as a FA. Now say that at the end of that contract, the average of the 10 highest OT salaries is 6 million. I don't think in this scenario you should be able to LTC your 99 rated OT at 6 million a year. The 10% rule would say his LTC deal would be 8*1.1 = 8.8 million a year instead. The very top of the market guys are probably worth slightly more than the average 10 highest salaries.
There is an argument that this is not fair in the case of backloaded or restructured deals, but I'd like to see the 10% rule applied there as an extra consequence of these contract options.

Re: LTC figures
Are we ready on this to formulate a vote? Or are we not voting and just implementing it into our system?

If a player is rated as an 87 and his LTC is the top 10 average of guys underneath him, does that also include anyone rated as an 87 as well? If not, I'd like to see that added.

Re: LTC figures
We're going to have to adjust the script and play with some of the numbers and see the outcomes in some case studies and see if it cleans up the results sufficiently for most.
The way I've been thinking of it (but we'll have to see what kind of figures generated)...
Take players current grade + 2 (which we already were doing last year). For examples 87 grade + 2.
Search all similar position players with salaries 89 and below (in that case) for the top 10 highest salaries (potentially excluding some of the odd cases such as restructured deals).
LTC equals that average of top 10 highest qualifying salaries OR a 20% raise whichever is higher -- to ensure LTC isn't a paycut for the most elite players already at the top of their positional pay scale. [ edit: looking at last year's ltc quote scripts it mentions a 20% raise if salary higher than average based upon the franchise tags using that 120% ]
LTC options given to teams based upon that figure similarly to last year with some of them including a no-trade clause depending upon choice of LTC length.

Re: LTC figures
Okay thanks, I just didn't want anyone with the same rating to get excluded. I'd be in favor of the +2 as well just to keep elite players or great players paid as they should be.

Re: LTC figures
Quick update. In the process of changing everything over to 2013.
I haven't tested all the discussed LTC tweaks, but have expanded the window it looks for comparable salaries now to go from +2 grade or below to get a larger sample. We'll keep looking at some of these 2013 finance items this weekend.
Nobody can make any changes right now or do anything with roster while I'm adjusting things for the new year, but you can look up LTC quotes with that adjustment as we discuss further before finalizing soon as we gear up for the season so let me know if any big problems noted.

I also switched the team rosters to 2013 finances and doing some last minute adjustments for the new year. I haven't done everything discussed yet like testing the cap only counting top 51/53. You should be able to enter tags/rfas sometime this weekend. For now it asks you at the top to check in for 2013 so I can make sure everyone's around and knows free agency is around the corner.
I'd tentatively pencil in the first week of April for free agency start just to start to throw time frames around now that some of the needed changes are being made. Thanks.

Re: LTC figures
Are we going to be able to LTC a guy who has 1 year still left on their contract?

Re: LTC figures
Unless there are large objections to that aspect, that was an option last year and wasn't something mentioned as much about needing to change that I heard. Mostly the talk was about fixing some of the loopholes that gave unfair numbers to some at times.tino38 wrote:Are we going to be able to LTC a guy who has 1 year still left on their contract?
Something to remember with that, though, is there is only 1 LTC per team per year overall. So you can use it on a guy still under contract for another year, but he'd be the only guy you could give an LTC to and nobody else on the free agency market (you could still offer them franchise tags, etc.). An exclusive franchise tag is similar to LTC as we've done them in recent years but based upon franchise tag amounts.
