Maybe on the point of Andre Smith and all others like him, you give the 11% discount on his 1st year of the LTC, and then when new grades are out you change years 2-3/4/5 of the deal to the % of what the new grade is and you go forward with it like that for the remainder of the deal? Chris Harris was the #5 CB rated by PFF. No way would it be fair for him to be discounted at an 18% discount when other guys would be paying much more for their corners. So as example say you LTC Harris this year with 1 year left. He then gets the 18% discount on the first year of the extension, and then if he improves to a 90 overall with new grades then the rest of the contract is at the adjusted 10% discount.

It is my favorite option so far as well.

Whether the player underperforms or not or has a career ending injury shouldn't matter though. That's the risk you take with the extension in first place.

I'm just saying that because we think his grade should go up doesn't mean it will

You can extend with 1 year left? Thought it had to be expiring? Must have missed that note.

Jared A wrote:Another option...

15% discount off of franchise if contract's expiring. 25% off franchise if there's one year left.

So, instead of using our averages, we use the real NFL's contracts to prevent our best players from being locked up long term for next to nothing.

Yes you can extend with one year left, but the current year is replaced by the new salary

I still think this is the most important issue to resolve this offseason.

So, bump.

I still think this one will work itself out over time.

But, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be discussed.

So, bump again. :D

It can't work itself out overtime, that would be impossible.

Why? Because we'll always have rookie contracts averaging into A rated player (because there's so few 97's), but not averaging into B rated player (because there's so man 85's). Rookie contracts will always drag down the value of the high rated players, but won't even factor into a B or B+.

I agree as more of the expensive B+ rate guys go up in grade it will bring up the value of the the higher rated LTC's/
