2011 RULES: Draft or Wait

How should the labor issues impact our sim draft?

Keep it real. April draft. Can't trade players, but only swap picks like NFL currently.

Wait. Hold off draft until we know more about our salary cap and new rules, then hold draft allowing players to be dealt for picks.

Forget labor issues, allow trades of either players or picks without limitation and without salary cap consideration knowing cap changes could be coming later pending NFL agreement.

The real question is... if the NFL doesn't have a season, do we want to have a season? (I vote yes)
I think if we didn't have a season at all, we'd lose a lot of GMs in the meantime. I'm open to having a season, but not an unrealistic one. Otherwise, I don't see a point.

There has to be an injury factor of some sort.

In Madden, every player gets an injury grade, so perhaps we could somehow use that grade as a way to run the season, assuming there's no NFL.

I think what's likely to happen in the NFL is that some games might get canceled, but not the entire season.

I agree 100%, you know what the rookie pay was last year. It will not be going up, thats almost a given. You wait until August or later, I have other leagues with money on the line that will take priority over this.
Honestly, I would like to do CFFL draft before NFL. A true KNOWLEDGE TEST of league GM's. But like the rookie pay scale going up, I know that will never happen.
Draft in April, No reason not too. Might help your team during Free Agency, if there is one.

IMO I think it is a reach to say the owners know how things will end up..obviously I nor anyone else really knows for certain otherwise there would be CBA.
We can guess that rookie scale will go down, which to me is a non-issue for waiting...if we expected rookie scales to increase then I could buy the wait approach.
One of the greatest things that others and Goodell have talked about is the CFFL being a relative representation of real life events. Personally I'm excited about the draft mirroring real life as it will put a slightly different spin on the draft and allow CFFL GM's to make decisions regarding their teams with certain "variables" thrown in the mix.

I certainly can see the feelings that some others may have towards the other options and why they would consider them but I for one like it when the CFFL appraoches externalities such as CBA, draft, offseason, etc in a somewhat similar environment as the NFL is faced with.

I think we need a new poll...

Extend FANGM CBA

or

Keep it real

Then we need to get the ball rolling one way or another. Draft is coming up soon.

While we wait for the next round of the battle on or before April 6, would it be worthwhile to get going any discussions regarding rules changes that will not be impacted by the labor deal?

We can. There are one or two I had in mind. I'm open to other suggestions also via PM or replied here. There were a couple discussed earlier that I'm still thinking about in general.

The biggest rule changes to me are going to come with the labor issues being resolved and whatever new reality the NFL finds in regards to free agency, draft, contracts, roster sizes, cap, etc.

I'd like the differentiator for this league to be reality and as little artificial rules outside of that as we can, but I know we're different and need some sim rules too.

Honestly last year was a tough one for me to keep up with the league. I hadn't been able to progress with expanding it as much as hoped because I didn't have the time, so time and excitement were an issue sometimes with keeping up with things.

I probably need to go one way or the other with things, where I either get back in gear in taking the site to a level I'd hoped before (lots of sports, lots of leagues, better tools) where I can get re-energized around things or take a day-to-day management step back and just build more back-end controls for others and turning more over on the dailiy management to volunteers or even other commissioners where I just did some programming from time-to-time when needed for others to manage and just had fun running a team with everyone else.

My thought is I'm going to try to do both in some ways as I'd really like to start working on new features for the site again including some to where other leagues could use some of the tools too with more independent commish management tools. And if I got too busy again someday or had to miss some time, there could be a switch to flick with activating some tools to allow others to step up more also as part of the new features.

I am no longer working two jobs as I was much of the football season. I just finished a big presentation last Friday that we'd been working on for months. I think I'll have some time now to devote toward enhancements now, but that's always a sitaution in flux. Also have a week long vacation at the end of May.

Some of the sim-only rules may be impacted by where I can adjust the site in general this off-season, and how I position some of the other games around a central theme of reality-based simulation in gemeral.

If I can expand to add more leagues and get more newcomers playing, I'll probably have to add more tools for trade approval processes and avoiding some issues you get with a broader base of less experienced players in new leagues sometimes testing the limits, but I'd set some of those things up hopefully that could be turned on for one league and off for another as needed. In those cases, I don't really have much specifics yet on what to turn on or off per league so the polling would have to be more general with some details still in the works.

I am sure there would be some others willing to do this as well, but if need be and you do open up some new leagues, I would consider possibly trading into the new league so we get some people with experience in each of the leagues and it is not just all new people.
