Why should an award be given when we make a good selection? No such award takes place in the NFL. Every player, coach, GM, and owner knows it's every bit of a business as it is a game and they are all out to get paid.
But in real life, the teams do get an award. They can renegotiate prior to a player's FA. Even if they aren't going to pick up the 5th year.

We haven't seen it happen yet, but I don't think this is true. The fifth year is similar to the franchise tag. I am sure some players will be reasonable and realize their market value simply isn't that high. Besides, we always hear about players hating the tag because it has no security. I bet savvy teams will decline the option and work out a more reasonable extension during the fourth year of the deal. Plenty of players would prefer a 3-4 year extension over a single year option. This is why I think we should still have our normal FA bidding rights if we decline the option. If other teams are willing to pay more, they can still sign the player away.

That's not really true. Teams can have a lot of calls out and channels open, but they can only focus on so many players at once. It's rare to see more than 2guys visiting a facility at once. It's partly about having salary cap uncertainty and partly about putting a full court press on a guy to make him feel wanted. NFL teams have to decide who to push for on day one and what kind of player they can wait to find when the market softens.

But I'm not talking FA. I'm talking about players on current roster. GMs can aim to lock up as many players as they would like. Doesn't mean they will or can, but they have that opportunity. We do not. We can LTC one player to lock him up.

I'm confused then. It seems like we are arguing for the same side. If NFL teams can renegotiate with as many players as they like, why shouldn't we keep our FA rights to players even if we don't chose to take the 5th year option since we can't really simulate the renegotiation before free agency?

Well I am more in agreement with Ben in his post above above a player wanting to probably go elsewhere if the option is not picked up. Not sure many players would want to even talk to the previous team if they weren't in agreement on the option

I shouldn't have to cut a player because I don't want to pay him a franchise tag. Players have contracts that expire and don't just run to another team. I think declining the option should count as them being an unrestricted FA with unlimited bids.
