Possible Alternative to Madden?

It just seems to me Madden sometimes is more of a popularity contest than a football rating. its always the big names that get the good grades, while like someone said earlier, sometimes great players on bad teams don't get much credit for what they do. If you haven't read it, PFF can shock you sometimes with backups they like more than starters, even if that starter is a "big name" guy.

which is why you average the two. And if they aren't playing and have no pff rating then they just stick with madden. We have been talking about finding another way of rating players since this league started, to not be so dependant on 1 source.

And on pff you can sort by players who played all snaps, 25% snaps, 50%, 60%, or 75% of the snaps. Which keeps your from overrating/underraing a guy who played one or two snaps very well or very bad.


Just a look at a couple of players of your oline cffl to see what im talking about. For this example im starting with 9.0 for best player at position, then dropping .2 per rank on centers and .1 per rank on gaurds/tackles


Jeff Saturday, madden 90 = 7.2. pff 5th center = 8.2 = new proposed average = 7.7
Scott Wells , madden 85 = 6.5, pff 4th center = 8.4 = new average = 7.5
Jason Spitz, madden 77 = 5.7, didn't play 25% of snaps = 5.7 average
Geoff Schwartz, same didn't play 25% of snaps, keeps madden 76 = 5.6
Kraig Urbik, madden 75, 5.5, pff 16th gaurd = 7.4 = new average 6.5
King Dunlap, didn't play keeps madden
Phil Costa, madden 68 - 4.8, pff 30th center - 3.0 = new average 3.9
Derek Hardman, didn't play keeps madden
Brandon Fusco, didn't play keeps madden


I know its not perfect yet, but i think he can be worked on to really look good. Depending on how much your drop the grade per rank.

Lets just take a look at the fullbacks on my aff titans roster.

Jed Collins 82 madden. PFF gives him a +10.2 rating and 2nd best fullback.
Ahmard Hall 79 madden. Pff gives him a -6.4 rating and 25th best fullback.

I don't think the two should be rated quite that close together.

With my way of averaging it would drop hall down to a 5.0 and bring collins up to a 7.5.

Just to compare collins to the #1 rated pff FB.
Vonta Leach - madden 97 - 8.7, Pff 1 - 9.0 = new 8.9
Jed Collins - madden 82 - 6.2, pff 2 - 8.8 = new 7.5

Still a bit of difference. Even though according to pff Leach is +10.3 and Collins +10.2. Making them very comparable. So we are not completely getting rid of madden, it definately still plays a major role in the players rating.


On a side note. With PFF we have many options of getting more in depth in the future if possible. They keep track of number of plays, number of penalties, and so much more. They give a penalty rating that would be very interesting to sometime develope into our sim.

Not if we can set it up for excell spreadsheet to do it all. Which is the plan. Can't be doing it all manually or it would take forever and make the game not fun, which i don't think anyone wants.

Well I don't pretend to understand how to do that sort of thing. So if troy thinks it wouldnt be an issue then I don't see why we couldnt.

I've got an excel sheet already produced now that has all positions separated. All we would need to do is add a row or two.
