2011 RULES: Draft or Wait

How should the labor issues impact our sim draft?

Keep it real. April draft. Can't trade players, but only swap picks like NFL currently.

Wait. Hold off draft until we know more about our salary cap and new rules, then hold draft allowing players to be dealt for picks.

Forget labor issues, allow trades of either players or picks without limitation and without salary cap consideration knowing cap changes could be coming later pending NFL agreement.

Here's my opinion...

I'm fine with waiting til about 2 weeks after the draft to hold our draft. BUT IF THE NFL HAS A RULE THAT BEFORE THE DRAFT, NO PLAYERS CAN BE TRADED FOR PICKS, LIKE IT IS RIGHT NOW AS OF THIS MOMENT, then we should keep that. Whatever is in place when the NFL drafts we should keep in place. We shouldn't have our draft after the new CBA or with new CBA rules. I could see why Jared wants to wait, he has nothing but draft picks, and the rules and lockout of the NFL absolutely screw him over I'm sure. But it's a risk he took, and I think if the NFL says no trading players before this draft, then we shouldn't be allowed to either. We should do whatever the NFL does.

I know we had a cap this year when the NFL didn't, but that's the only difference between the NFL and here I agree with. We needed a cap. If there is no free agency currently in the NFL, well, we cant do it until later. Let them figure everything out, all those varibles talked about. If they are still having the draft, albeit, not being allowed to trade players, then we should do the same. We'll worry about the changes the NFL makes to the CBA when they do later, and continue with the draft, just as they will ignore the CBA and continue with the real draft.

I do have a ton of picks in AFFL, and zero picks in CFFL and DFFL. That's not the real reason I object to "keeping it like the NFL"

There's a lot of places where this league can resemble reality, and there's a lot of ways that it would ruin the game. We can't negotiate contract extensions with players... and there's a reason for that, but is it realistic? No. I'm all for mirroring reality when it makes sense, but let's remember this is a game to be played. There are places where we are at distinct advantages from an NFL team... and there are places where we are at a disadvantage from NFL teams. The draft... the single most important event in the NFL and FanGM... isn't a time where we should handicap teams.

I don't know anything about the labor other than rumors. But, I can promise that NFL owners when they're drafting will have a TON more information about what 2011, 2012 and on will look like than I do. Also, they will know a lot more than we do about their specific teams, simply because they were allowed to sign their expiring contracts.

See, I'm on the other side of Jared. I have a few free agents and no draft picks. I was hoping to make a few trades of a couple of players before the draft to gain picks so I could plug my potential holes. Not being able to trade players would hurts GM's who are looking to compete next year who have alot of picks. They probably want to do what sooner did in 2009 and make trades for impact players while still working the draft. That's why I think it should be wide open so GM's can make the most of their draft picks whether through the actual draft or trading for players they think will help their team.

If we don't have our free agency first, how will signing RFA's and Franchise players go? Does the signing team forfeit picks in 2012?

Great point Jared. Also, if we are going to mirror NFL, then why aren't we doing tags and signing FAs? The problem is that we can't mirror 100% exactly, which is why I believe it's best to wait it out until more details are known. If that means we do the draft in July, then so be it. What does it really hurt?

If we do the draft on time, then I think we do FA, tags, etc now and then just take the risk (same as real life NFL teams) that we might have to cut back if the salary cap shrinks.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they will get these issues resolved as it looks like they're trying to extend the deadline.

I completely agree.
We do the draft on time as real life NFL teams are preparing for, we do FA, tags, etc now/near future and then just take the risk (same as real life NFL teams) if the cap shrinks...although I think that is a risk that will not happen
It doesn't hurt to wait, but in my opinion I just think staying as close to what is really happening now and going forward will prevent a drastic difference in the CFFL and NFL down the road.

If we do FA now... are our RFA's going to be 3,4, or 6? The NFL is currently pretending that RFA's are at 6. Are we going to do what the NFL is doing? Because if we do that, and then they do a CBA that says it's 4, all our players will be signed, while all the REAL nfl players will be free agents....

I just see this as an enormous problem, that is impossible to proceed with until after a CBA is determined.
