2024 SEASON UPDATE

Post by Goodell »

Our sim week 1 has been posted.

Depth charts are unlocked. Please check your depth chart for the new season and make sure you have it set as you want it.

Week 1 is always the busiest, but we'll try to do our sim games as early as possible each week after the NFL games in order to keep depth charts unlocked as much as we can throughout the week to allow changes and trades in the early season. I will
try to sim Wednesday night each week for the first half of the season. Once we get past the trade deadline, that doesn't matter as much with transactions more limited for the second half of the season.

Depth charts will be locked again Sunday morning once NFL games start. Players from Thursday night matchups will be locked in place once that game gets going, as team cannot change their depth chart here after the fact already knowing the results of player games. As always, teams can change their depth charts anytime for players who haven't played that week yet even if locked online just by sending me a PM. You can make trades all week until Sunday mornings and update depth chart for all other players.

Good luck this season!

Week 4 simmed. Now that we're past this point, we'll update grades and downgrade players not in the league (until they're back in the NFL with grades again) as usual after week 4 before our next sim. We'll also have our first bye games this week (DET, SD, PHI, TEN). If you have a sim player on an NFL bye, they get an averaged game from NFL stats this season.

As we're doing injuries a little different this year after off-season rules discussion without various injury levels and grade downgrades, that impacts how we do bye week injuries. Typically we'd take the previous week injury report and level everyone up one level outside of "out" players if they weren't seriously hurt and widely reported expected to miss multiple weeks or put on injury list then they'd remain out of course. So most outs would go to doubtfuls if their next week was a bye in previous years. As we're not really doing doubtful and questionable, etc. we'll still level up out players but they'd be leveled up to back healthy if on a bye without injury report, again outside of obvious cases where a very serious injury well reported to be out multiple weeks ahead.

Re: 2024 SEASON UPDATE

Now that we're past week 4, grades have been adjusted.

- Madden grades have been updated.

- As we instituted in recent seasons, players with higher PFF grades get bonus points (max 1-3, lowest grades eligible for most bonus). 170 players were given bonus points for higher PFF grade. PFF grades were collected after week 4 prior to last weekend's games (grades may be different online now after they graded those games we haven't played yet). See data output below. Let me know if you believe a player wasn't updated as they should have been. We use the OFF and DEF grades for those for the PFF grades. Hybrid grades including a Madden baseline and any PFF extra points have been updated.

After 4 weeks, players who had grades in the summer but are no longer listed in Madden public grades site also had their grades knocked down 25% until they have their grades updated again. Send me a PM if you notice one of your players knocked down who is back playing active in NFL games again + has had a madden grade publicly posted again. We will not update those grades or remove the reduction unless those players are listed on the madden public site again.

Here are the PFF bonuses added to Madden grades:

Am I crazy or have 25% grade reductions always been for players that are no longer in the league. Now we are reducing all practice squad players to? What sense does that make when you consider they are still on NFL teams and teams elevate two players every week to play in NFL games. By doing this you are also weakening the overall depth of the league and making it tough to fill out rosters after injuries.

Was there a offseason poll for this change?

Reference our previous direct communications last year on this very topic. There seemed to be misunderstanding about this (in very rare instances) in the past and I've attempted each year to make it clearer that we'll give players with no current public madden grade their updated grade once they have a public grade in Madden again.

Last year was about a player that was out of the league and then signed with a teams practice squad. We have never reduced every practice squad player in the league. It makes no sense because they are still on the team and two play every Sunday for the team.

There are players on nfl practice squads with public madden grades. If players are in nfl games making plays, odds of having madden grade certainly are higher. With grade updates we want grades that reflect current season game evaluation, not off-season expectation never updated for current game play. That’s the reason we do this.

When gathering data I don’t recall putting a list together of every team’s practice squad (which changes incredibly frequently) so I could keep those grades, although may have depended if resources used listed them. I’d certainly sometimes get requests based on practice squad which led to those past discussions referenced.

For efficient league operations on the whole I cannot monitor numerous daily practice squad transactions across all 32 nfl teams and adjust grades as players go on or off practice squads or have tryouts or whatever.

Nor would it be fair, as we discussed last year, to only give a single or very few sim teams an advantage for monitoring daily practice squad transactions and requesting grades of their players be restored because of practice.

We use public madden grades. If a player has one, we use it. If they don’t, we update it once they have one again. If they are actively playing games and making nfl plays, they typically get a madden grade update based upon evaluation of game performance. Nobody’s giving grades for tryouts or practices.

When veterans recently became more often on practice squads and limited psquad able to be activated, it definitely muddied up the waters of what is considered active nfl roster players, and understandably more room for confusion or argument. For league efficiency, we need realistic and fair processes and definitions so tried to make that very clearly defined both in public posts and discussions with few team(s) who have written me about it further or requesting practice impact their grades.

Currently the most efficient and fairest way on this is as posted using our baseline madden public grades. We aren’t going to track daily practice changes to adjust grades universally for practices, and we aren’t going to give single sim team advantages for doing that and requesting player at practice should have his grade adjusted. If madden has a grade for them, we use that as baseline. If madden doesn’t, if that player starts playing in nfl games again and making plays then likely will have grade and we’d update as we do to public madden grades.
