Default QB updates for players without stats has come up at times over the years. We have to give a QB some kind of game input stats, whether they played or not (whether resting in Week 17 for playoffs or being a real backup), so our method has been a tiered value based upon grades where better QBs get better default updates. Here's how it was setup previously:
Elite 7.0+ grade QBs get 15-for-25 (60%) for 225 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT.
Grade 5.0 - 6.9 grade QBs get 12-for-22 (54%) for 200 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.
Below 5.0 grade QBs get 10-for-20 (50%) with 150 yards with 1 INT and random 0 or 1 TD.
If you're wondering the random 0 or 1 TD are in there for cases like rebuilding teams that might play a young QB with no game stats here so that they don't end the season with 0 TDs all year unrealistically over 16 games but more like 8 with a TD every other game or so.
That middle 5.0 - 6.9 grade range gets most of the players that covers a wide range from Roethlisberger to Paxton Lynch.
Arguably that's too wide of a range for the same default updates and could use another tier to separate players by quality. Proposing adding another level and slight tweak that we'll institute if no major objections.
Elite 7.0+ grade QBs get 15-for-25 (60%) for 225 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT.
Grade 6.0 - 6.9 grade QBs get 12-for-22 (54%) for 200 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.
Grade 5.0 - 5.9 grade QBs get 10-for-20 (50%) with 150 yards with 1 INT and random 0 or 1 TD.
Below 5.0 grade QBs get 8-for-18 (44%) with 120 yards with random 2 or 1 INT and random 0 or 1 TD.
On a team with great grades that gets maximum advantages over opponents, the default update can go up as much as 15% max. On weak teams against strong opposition, those defaults could go down as much as 15% max. And game situations, like being down and the coach calling more passes to catch up, can also impact attempts/results. Like all QBs in the game.
Wanted to let teams know about this small adjustment before players are signed starting this weekend.
