I think $5m is plenty and agree with Shark and others that it's a bit risky to increase it much more. If we do increase to $10m I think it shouldn't go into effect until 2018 season. Some GMs would have done things differently perhaps if they knew they were carrying over 10 instead of 5.

Just to update as I'm working on 2017 figures currently. The carry over from last year's cap for decisions made last season has now been applied to 2017 season rosters with the 5M cap. Any future changes to carry over rules would apply to future off-seasons with a full season of salary cap decisions to be made prior to next off-season carry overs.

I completely understand tying things to reality, but we have to be careful about clinging to that premise as the sole reason for every decision. We see teams accumulate 4+ 1st round picks on a yearly basis. That's in no way realistic. Giving teams the opportunity to have a 6-7% total cap advantage is pretty massive, IMO. I think we want to discourage less spending, and encourage smart spending.

CONCLUSION: Keep this in mind for free agency spending starting next week. We will be increasing our unspent cap carry-over amounts from 5M to 10M this season ahead.
