It was brought up recently with the Free Agency changes for this off-season poll. We do now have much higher annual salary requirements for longer-term deals. That was the one new proposed change that had the most mixed reaction and a lot of no votes, though, so we didn't go quite as high and compromised with a slightly smaller bar on long-term deal annual salaries with the thought that it was a good first step and something to monitor for future change discussions. It knocked down something people complained about a lot last off-season (6-year deals with 1M salary and 3M sb as noted in that poll). So there are no more of those and the salary minimums are higher now for longer deals. Signing bonuses were also capped for the first time to prevent extreme signing bonuses (we had some 70M SBs in the past). We'll see how that first step goes if there is more support for raising salary requirements in the future.

had a thought on this as well. I know we have a "veterans minimum" but what if that was raised based on grade? Current vet min being 760k, what if that was for players 79 and lower. Then 80-84 is 1 mil, 85-89, 1.25mil, etc.

Not huge changes but making cost a little more to get those guys, even on a minimum deal.

Can we just go with the changes we've made for a year or so and see how they go before trying to come up with a bunch more?

Just a reminder about tagged/RFA players requiring compensation. We made this change a while back where teams can REDUCE the compensation required for a tagged/RFA player, but to do that they have to let ALL teams know so everyone can bid fairly on the player with all knowing the reduced compensation. If you have a tagged/RFA player that you are going to let go for less than the required compensation, you should click on your player's name in free agency and at the bottom of the bid page there's a place to lower the compensation required.

Failure to do so may result in the signing being invalidated and the player returning to free agency with the new required compensation listed for all teams.

I like how a lot of the changes have played out so far. Thought LTCs were a bit high even though I voted for the 75% floor on elite players. Don't like high SB being thrown around but we'll see how that plays out.

One thing I thing we should consider is updating the bid score to give higher weight to multi year contracts for the total salary vs one year deal. I admit this is a strategy I use to exploit those high long term offers.

Example:

BID SCORE: 114.541116751
1.30456852792 x (29550000 + 9000000 + 5x9850000)
Cap/YR: 9,850,000
Total: 29,550,000 | Guaranteed: 9,000,000

TEST YOUR COUNTER OFFER: 129.859180328
1.92213114754 x (9760000 + 9000000 + 5x9760000)
Cap/YR: 9,760,000
Total: 9,760,000 | Guaranteed: 9,000,000

In this case the free agent should take the 3 year deal vs the 1 year deal.

I would disagree. The 1 year deal is almost all guaranteed, whereas the 3 year deal has the same amount guaranteed. Players want to hit free agency as much as possible during their prime years.

Tag/RFA Bids

Post by Goodell »

As free agency is starting to slow down, let's make this the last week for any last bids on any RFA or tagged players. We need to have those all resolved prior to our draft as they can impact draft order. Friday 5/13 is the last day to bid on any restricted/tagged players.

If you RFA doesn't get any bids, they'd be on their 1-year salary that's listed on the team roster page. If your franchise tagged player doesn't get any bids after this week, you'll have some options to extend their contracts at franchise tag price.
