2013 RULES: Cap Carry Over

Post by Goodell »

Last year we instituted rules that teams could carry over up to $5M of their unspent dollars under cap to next season (not including monies borrowed).

Here are the figures as we'd apply them to next year:

ANNOUNCEMENT:
The first day of spring is Wednesday, March 20. That'll be the last day of the 2012 salary cap, and we'll switch over to 2013 finances after that. Let me know if any problems with your 2012 figures before then. If you have a positive salary cap still and enough available to afford a cap hit (plus full year's salary already paid) you can cut players through then. However, that could reduce the amount you'd have carried over depending upon your situation.

Here are the real NFL figures for cap carry over this off-season and last year. The NFL's figures are much higher on the top end (from $20M+ for some) than we currently allow. Part of that is we wanted to be cautious trying this new element, and to also reflect that we are using fake money compared to reality so put in some artificial limits there to prevent teams from going to far extremes beyond all reality with fake funds. It's important to note that these carry over amounts will show up as -5,000,000 entries in the cap hits area of a team's roster and effectively increase their available limit (similar to borrowed money is up to -3,000,000) for just that ONE YEAR.

Sorry off to work but quick question, is there a double wammy going on with the borrowing?

Ind AFFL. he borrowed against next years cap. So has dead money in 2013.

Indianapolis | 503,650 Unspent Cap Space - 1,285,650 Borrowed = 0 carried over to next year

So if he already has full 1.2 mil in dead money in 2013 shouldnt he get to carry his 500k over?

He would still be getting a 700k hit on next years.

Didnt have time to read the rule so does it state if you borrow against next year you dont get to carry anything over?

Thanks later!
AFFL - Titans GM since 2007
96 - 62 - 2 regular season
6 playoff appearances
4 division titles
2 conference titles
1 AFFL title

The way the rules were setup, borrowed money is excluded from being carried over. It's not if you borrow $1 you can't carry anything over at all. It's if you borrow $1 that will be subtracted from the amount you're allowed to carry over.

The idea being if a team is right at the cap, they can't just borrow $3M against next year's cap and then carry an extra $3M over next year too. Carry over is for UNSPENT dollars under the cap. Extending your credit borrowing against the future to get a little extra beyond the cap wouldn't be unspent money under the cap.

We'll keep the same cap carry over rules for this new year as we had last year by popular support.

- The most a team can carry over in unspent cap space from this season to next off-season will remain $5 million.

- If you borrow any money against next year's cap this season, that borrowed money won't be eligible to be carried over.
