New trade deadline and IR rule
New trade deadline and IR rule
Just posting this here in case people miss it. ESPN and ProFootballTalk are reporting that the NFLPA has agreed to change in the trade deadline and the new IR exemption: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/83175 ... ne-changes
The NFL trade deadline is now after week 8.
Also, each team can now active one player each season from IR after the week 8. The wrinkle is that the player must be on the 53 man roster after preseason cuts, so players already on IR would not be eligible.

Re: New trade deadline and IR rule
Obviously, we need better sources on this, but there is more to the new IR rule. I'll post here though, as I have seen general agreement on this from several sources, but I have not yet seen it all written in an article.
1.) In general, the player must be "designated for return" when he is placed on IR.
2.) The player must have a "major injury" when placed on IR (defined as an injury which makes the player unable to practice/play for 6 or more weeks (42 calendar days) from the date of the injury). - Seems like an unimportant detail as far as we are concerned.
3.) Player is allowed to return to the active roster 8 weeks after he was placed on IR.
Note: Due to the timing of the adoption of this rule, FOR 2012 ONLY, teams are allowed to designate a player to return even if he has already been placed on IR. However, the NFL requires that player to be "designated for return" by 4 pm tomorrow Friday Aug 31.
Update: The special provision for this year appears to be even more bizarre. Here the whole thing laid out by PFT: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/ca ... umor-mill/
Apparently, if a team wishes to use the exemption on a player already on IR, they must designate that player by tomorrow afternoon. At that time, the player will count against the roster again and must be counted as being "active" in the final cut down to 53. Once the final cut is over, that player will go back on IR and apparently be eligible to play starting week 9.

Re: New trade deadline and IR rule
The players' union shot down both amendments. They're reportedly dead for this year (per ESPN's Chris Mortensen) but might get added next year, depending on what the league is willing to give up to get them.

Re: New trade deadline and IR rule
Thanks for the info. How things would effect us... whatever the NFL trade deadline actually ends up being, ours will be around that exact same time (just at the end of the week when we lock rosters instead of a tuesday or whatever).
For IR changes, if any, we'd probably have to take a closer look at integrating those and PUP or whatever else for a next year rule and programming change. At one time some of the injury options were overly complex and not something easy to implement in our system, but we'll eventually have to look at more sophistocation there in the future toward future seasons especially if any rule changes come in that regard that we'd like to attempt to mirror. But those would all be future season stuff requiring new programming changes, etc.
But always good to get further info on potential NFL rules change discussions. Thanks!

The news today is that the NFLPA agreed to the rules change, beginning this season. Will we still have to wait until 2013 for the change here?Goodell wrote:Thanks for the info. Re: New trade deadline and IR rule
We will do whatever the real NFL trade deadline is this year. Our rule/practice has always been based around the real NFL deadline, so if it moves so would ours. No extra progamming changes there really other than typing in a date.Ben C. wrote:The news today is that the NFLPA agreed to the rules change, beginning this season. We won't be able to change all our programming and adjustments to teams placing players on IR or taking them off, etc. in a short turn around and would have to be a future rules/programming change later.

Wow - heard Chris report they were dead last week on SVP show & I was completely bummed about it. Interesting that it would have changed that much in a week.Ben C. wrote: The news today is that the NFLPA agreed to the rules change, beginning this season. As a related note, will we be able to place players on PUP? I believe in the past it's been done via PM.

Re: New trade deadline and IR rule
I'll have to look again, and if any examples it would be great, but I don't know that we've done PUP before. I think it's something we've wanted to explore adding, but don't know if we actually did as there are some complications to that. If a guy is taken off PUP in reality during the season but his sim team never opens a roster spot for them re-activated, do they get to just leave a guy on PUP all year despite him not being technically IR eligible? We'd have to additionally monitor PUP players individually closer also to activate and see their sim team situations.
I guess one thing we could do is classify players eligible to add to PUP like we do IR, then after a player activated in reality I would activate them in sim or if no room cleared for them perhaps treat them as cut players put on the market after some time. But then if a GM is on vacation or something maybe he gets a good player on PUP cut because he never opened a roster spot when the player active, etc. So some processes to think through there I don't know if we ever fully thought through or added into the system as could be ideal.
