Hold out policy

I know we're not quite to the end of the season yet, but I'd like to get my first discussion point out for potential rule changes. I think we need some sort of formula in place to start forcing hold-outs for clearly underpaid players. Not to pick on any single person, but Michael Vick would just not show up if he was only receiving $435k at this point. Also, I think we need it to prevent drop/sign for ridiculously low levels towards the end of the year. Not picking on Larry here, but there's no way Bryant McKinnie & Quintin Mikell would sign for those amounts if they were cut this late in a real season. They would just wait till after the year & sign for fair value deals.

We could maybe start the holdouts in their final year of their rookie contracts (or just say no holdouts until after rookie contract is up), but I think it needs to be addressed to keep the league as realistic as possible.

Sounds to me like Vick is appropriately priced for a below average QB. The league doesn't include hometown discounts or renegotiated deals either. Just restructured which is way different.

I really think there are to many variables to insert something like this into the league....

He might be now, but wasn't paid appropriately for several years. I don't think it would be that hard to add a filter for this. An average salary level depending on the rating by position should be easy to add.

At some point in the season (not sure which week) all players released (veteran or not) are supposed to go through the waiver process.
When does that rule kick in?

You are correct. That is a real NFL rule, so we should try to do it. If it is possible.

It should be after the trade deadline I believe. I'm not sure if I missed doing something manually or something off there as thought it was incorporated at one point. In any event for future, need to make that clearer and automated as part of the system with a warning about veteran cut after trade deadline (or whenever the cutoff I believe we used trade deadline in previous rules discussions in past years) would have to go through waivers at that time.

Having a sim player do a virtual hold out is something we thought about and discussed when league first setup, but haven't ever done because of complications. My hope was/is that situations would be limited to prevent cases. Some of the worst ones historically were before we made some rule changes about lengths of contracts and limits raised, etc. It's something we can look at again and discuss in the off-season especially if it's something coming up more now. It would require building some new scripts or some manual administration and lots of grey area possibly, so definitely would take some looking at.
